Description
This publication consists of a PDF file of a 1:24,000 scale, surficial geologic map of the Catawissa 7.5-minute quadrangle and a file geodatabase containing the geologic data shown on the map. The physiography of the quadrangle reflects a landscape formed by folded Paleozoic rocks that are draped in Pleistocene and Holocene sediment. Erosion-susceptible shales underlay most of Catawissa Creek Valley and Roaring Creek Valley. Catawissa Mountain is composed largely of resistant sandstone and conglomerate and the lowlands around Fishing Creek and its tributaries are in shale and limestone and the highlands are composed of well-cemented siltstone and sandstone. Surficial deposits include Pre-Illinoian and Illinoian glacial tills and stratified gravels, loess, colluviums, alluvium, river terraces, and anthropogenic deposits. Radiocarbon and optical-stimulated luminescence dating samples are plotted on the map.
